Village Development- Periyakulam

A fund of $24,200 has been allocated to the Periyakulam Village Development Organization to address essential needs identified through a comprehensive assessment. This support will facilitate salaries for agricultural and goat farm staff, enhance educational opportunities through an after-school program for students, and provide financial assistance to eight university students from Periyakulam, fostering their academic growth and future opportunities.

Village Development- Panchanai Village

A total of $15,500 has been allocated to the Panchanai Village Development Organization to address priority needs identified through a local assessment. This support enables after-school programs for Grade 5 and Grades 9–11, along with computer and English classes for students in Grades 6 to 8. It also provides vital assistance to 18 A/L students covering accommodation, tuition, and exam preparation. Additionally, funding has been directed toward supporting a girls' team participating in a national competition and supplying essential sports accessories.

Rehabilitation

Self-employment projects have been launched in Mannar to support physically challenged individuals and war-affected families, in collaboration with local partners “We Can” and “Theene.” These initiatives aim to foster economic independence and restore livelihoods by providing skills training, resources, and opportunities for sustainable income generation.

Education Development

Comprehensive educational support programs have been implemented across multiple regions, including financial assistance for 20 university students studying at institutions island-wide. Additional support is being provided to financially disadvantaged children through TECAWAC in Batticaloa and afterschool programs in Kannagipuram (Amparai), Great Western Talawakelle, and Pandiviruchan for Grades 5, 9 to 11. Three students are receiving educational aid through the Jaffna Hindu Old Boys Association, while Sithivinayakar Hindu College in Mannar has been equipped with school accessories and sports equipment. Furthermore, early childhood education is being strengthened through a pre-school program in Trincomalee, supported by Tinco Hope.

Drinking Water to Panchenai

Panchenai faced an acute shortage of drinking water during the summer months, with roughly 200 families relying on deep traditional and tube wells that often ran dry. Anpuneri’s Panchenai Village Development Society hired a water‐resources engineer and technician to conduct yield and quality tests, then funded the installation of a submersible pump, piping, and a 500-L fiberglass tank on a raised stand. Completed on May 9, 2017, the system now fills the tank three times daily—serving over 20 families—and plans are underway for a second phase to upgrade a traditional well and build a purification station.

Livelihood Support & Wild Elephant Control

To address the severe threat of wild-elephant incursions (which had caused fatalities, injuries, and crop loss), Anpuneri-Panchenai Village Development Society, in consultation with wildlife officials, developed a sustainable control plan. Key elements funded and initiated in 2017 included planting thousands of palmyrah and citrus trees as a natural fence; employing eight guards for six months (with flashlights, salaries, and training); clearing 15-ft swaths on both sides of a nine-kilometer electric fence; reinforcing fence posts and gates; and refurbishing a village office for coordination and equipment storage. The community now levies paddy-field owners to sustain the program long-term.

Evening Classes in Panchenai Pari Vidyalayam

Beginning June 2017, Anpuneri funded after-school classes at Panchenai Pari Vidyalayam for Grades 8–11, overseen by the Panchenai Village Development Society and the Batticaloa West Zonal Education Office. Eight two-hour sessions per week cover Mathematics, Science, Tamil, English, and History—taught by expert teachers brought in from outside the village. These classes have significantly improved students’ performance and attendance, particularly in Grades 8–10, and have helped prepare 50% of Grade 11 students for the G.C.E. (O/L) exams.
